Sunrise at Jekyll Island
Share
Before sunrise at Driftwood Beach on Jekyll Island, Georgia, the sky began to glow with soft shades of blue, pink, gold and orange. The weathered tree created a dramatic silhouette against the brightening horizon, with a lone osprey perched quietly among its branches.
What especially caught my attention was the thin layer of water left behind by the tide. It reflected the warm color of the sky, carrying the light into the foreground and adding depth to the composition.
The difference between the brilliant sky and the shadowed driftwood was greater than a single exposure could capture. I photographed the scene using multiple exposures, then blended them into one finished image. This preserved the delicate highlights in the sky while bringing out detail in the darker shadows of the tree and beach.
It was a quiet moment when light, water, wildlife and the sculptural beauty of Driftwood Beach all came together.
