Welcome to From the Field

Photography has taken me to some remarkable places, but for me, the real enjoyment has always been about more than bringing home a photograph. It’s about being there—watching wildlife, learning its behavior, waiting for the light, and sometimes simply enjoying what happens in front of the camera.

That’s what From the Field is about.

In this series, I’ll share some of the stories and experiences behind my photographs: the wildlife I encounter, what I’ve learned from spending time with it, the challenges of capturing a particular image, and occasionally some of the techniques and equipment I use along the way.

Many of these stories will come from Florida, where I spend much of the winter and spring photographing birds and other wildlife. Others will take us farther afield—from the mountains and rainforests of Costa Rica to the waters of Vancouver Island and wherever the camera takes me next.

There is one thing you won’t find here—directions to sensitive wildlife locations. Part of being a wildlife photographer is respecting the animals we photograph, particularly nesting birds and young wildlife. I’ll happily share the experience without putting the wildlife at risk.

Mostly, though, From the Field is an invitation to come along.
